The Tennessee Department of Transportation held a public meeting for the SR-92 bridge replacement over the French Broad River in Dandridge, Jefferson County on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the Dandridge Activity Center (Field of Dreams), P.O. Box 249, Dandridge, TN 37725 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This meeting was held pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act. The meeting purpose was to share TDOT’s recommended alternative to replace the existing bridge adjacent to the current alignment and to solicit public input on the project and the proposed bridge aesthetics (lighting and rail concepts). The meeting also served as notice of TDOT’s intent to file, as part of the NEPA process, a Determination of Section 4(f) de minimis use (minor land acquisition) related to the Dandridge Municipal Park.

Project Description

The primary purpose and need for this project, which was initiated by TDOT, is to replace the State Route 92 Bridge over the French Broad River. The State Route 92 Bridge is critical in the connection between the communities south of the French Broad River and Dandridge, as well as Interstate 40. Without the Bridge, residents of communities south of the French Broad River would drive an additional 15 to 20 miles to access the next closest bridge.

The Point Resort marina and TVA public access also generate a significant amount of heavy vehicle traffic that relies on the State Route 92 Bridge for a connection across the River. Narrow lane widths on the existing through truss bridge create uncomfortable passing conditions for these large vehicles. Additionally, school busses, which cross the bridge on a daily basis, frequently report damaged mirrors.
Additional goals of this project include:

  • Maintaining the historic integrity of the Dandridge community
  • Improving opportunities for bicycling and walking

Proposed Typical Section of Replacement Bridge:

  • 52 foot wide (steel girder bridge)
  • Two, twelve foot lanes with a ten foot shoulder on each side and a five foot sidewalk
