  • The Safety Data Section is responsible for collecting and maintaining statewide crash data for the Department’s Tennessee Roadway Information Management System (TRIMS) database.  This information is analyzed and used to identify potential safety projects to be included in the listings for the Hazard Elimination Safety and High Risk Rural Roads Programs. This section is also responsible for monitoring and analyzing speed data for the Tennessee Speed Data Program.

    The Safety Project Section is responsible for the coordination, creation, development and management of safety projects identified under the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) which includes the Hazard Elimination Safety (HESP) and High Risk Rural Roads Programs (HRRRP).  This involves the development of a Road Safety Audit (RSA) and the creation of the Safety Project Team which includes TDOT staff from multiple Divisions within the Department, engineering consultants along with other state and local project area stakeholders that will participate in project development meetings and on-site visits during which possible safety improvements are identified and studied. Recommended safety improvements include but are not limited to the addition of signing, pavement markings and minor geometric improvements.  The section is responsible for all eligible projects listed  under the following safety programs; Road Safety Audit, Spot Safety/ NHTSA, Ramp Queue, Corridor Study, Interchange Action Plan, Roadway Departure Action Plan and Roadway Median Cable Barrier programs.

Safety Statistics

    • Provide Crash Statistics to functional areas within TDOT
    • Define Locations for Possible Safety Improvements
    • Investigates Crash Data for internal and external stakeholders

The Safety Data Section is responsible for collecting and maintaining statewide crash data for the Department’s Tennessee Roadway Information Management System (TRIMS) database.  This information is analyzed and used to identify safety concerns on all roadway projects and identify potential safety projects.  This data is also used to create the annual Hazard Elimination Safety and High Risk Rural Roads projects list.
