Division of Materials and Tests TDOT Certification: Concrete Technician Certification Program
Course Title: Concrete Plant Quality Control Technician Course Certification Level: Grade II
A Concrete Field Testing Technician is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform and record the results of seven basic test methods. Scope of Course The program requires a working knowledge of the following AASHTO/ASTM standards: AASHTO T 2/ASTM D 75 - Sampling of Aggregates AASHTO T 248/ASTM C 702 - Reducing Samples of Aggregate to Testing Size AASHTO T 27/ASTM C 136 - Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates AASHTO T 11/ASTM C 117 - Materials Finer than 75-mm (No. 200) Sieve in Mineral Aggregates by Washing AASHTO T 255/ASTM C 566 - Total Evaporable Moisture Content of Aggregate by Drying Supervisor's approval and written recommendation Completion of Concrete Certified Field Testing Technician Course, Grade I A basic understanding of concrete testing, placement, and inspection Familiarity with applicable TDOT Standard Specifications, Supplemental Specifications, and Special Provisions Mathematical skills through basic algebra TDOT will grant certification to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements: 1) A passing grade on the written examination; and 2) Successful completion of the performance examination. The one-hour written examination is "open book" and consists of 50 multiple choice questions. To pass the written examination, a minimum score of 70% overall is requred. The performance examination takes place immediately after the written examination. The performance examination requires that the student demonstration the knowledge and ability to perform each of the five required standards. Evaluators may ask questions during the performance of the tests in order to determine more accurately the students knowledge of the standards. The student is evaluated on his ability to correctly perform and describe all of the required procedures for each standard. Recertification is necessary every five (5) years and requires that the technician attend the classes and successfully complete the written and performance examinations. *NOTE: Cheating on any level WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT BE TOLERATED and will result in immediate expulsion from the course and a notification of supervisors and directors.
