The one-hour written examination is "open book" and consists of 50 multiple choice questions. To pass the written examination, a minimum score of 70% overall is requred.

The performance examination takes place immediately after the written examination.  The performance examination requires that the student demonstration the knowledge and ability to perform each of the five required standards.  Evaluators may ask questions during the performance of the tests in order to determine more accurately the students knowledge of the standards.  The student is evaluated on his ability to correctly perform and describe all of the required procedures for each standard.

Recertification is necessary every five (5) years and requires that the technician attend the classes and successfully complete the written and performance examinations.
