Course Title:  Hot Mix Asphalt Roadway Certification Course

Course Description

This three-day course is designed to provide both TDOT roadway inspectors and private contractors with a working knowledge and understanding of proper techniques for constructing Hot Mix Asphalt pavements with quality and efficiency according to TDOT specifications.

Scope of Course

The course requires a working knowledge of the following:

  • TDOT Standard Specification 407 Bituminous Plant Mix Pavements
  • Project Organization and Communication
  • Surface Preparation
  • Hot Mix Asphalt Delivery
  • Hot Mix Asphalt Placement
  • Joint Construction
  • Compaction
  • Density, Quality Control, and Quality Assurance
  • Local Issues, Troubleshooting, and Problem Solving

Prerequisites

Supervisor's approval and written recommendation

A general knowledge of roadway construction inspection

Familiarity with applicable TDOT Standard Specifications, Supplemental Specifications, and Special Provisions

Mathematical skills through basic algebra

 

Certification Requirements

TDOT will grant certification only to those applicants who meet the following requirements:

1) Attendance of the course in its entirety

2) A passing grade of 70% on the three hour written examination consisting of the following:

  • Multiple Choice Questions
  • Fill in the Blank Questions
  • Word Problems

*NOTE: Cheating on any level WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT BE TOLERATED and will result in immediate expulsion from the course and a notification of supervisors and directors.

Recertification is necessary every five (5) years, and requires attendance of the three-day school and a passing grade on the written examination.

The use of cell phone calculators WILL NOT be permitted during exam.
