Project Update

Improving 66 Facts

The speed limit is now 35 mph.
It will remain in effect for the duration of the project (April 3, 2015).

Phase 2 – Douglas Dam Road (SR-139) to south of the I-40 Interchange:

Phase 2 is Complete!

Phase 3 - Boyds Creek Highway (SR-338) to Douglas Dam Road (SR-139):

Electric and communications relocations are substantially complete. Water, gas, and sewer relocations are ongoing but approaching completion and will allow for installation of the remaining storm drain along the outside lanes.  The contractor continues to install the new 72” pipe along the southbound lanes.

The southbound bridge widening continues:  substructure widening and deck is complete.  Crews are constructing the parapet along the outside edge (as pictured below).  They are also starting to install temporary containment so that they may begin repainting the existing steel beams.  Then they will shift traffic along the southbound bridge to allow crews to place the concrete overlay on the existing deck.

In the coming months crews will shift traffic to the left side of the northbound bridge and begin constructing the proposed sidewalk along the right side.

Short duration traffic stops should be expected daily throughout the project as crews move equipment and materials in and out of the work zone (and patch potholes).  If you have any questions regarding the project, please call us at 865.429.4509.  As always, please use extreme caution and reduce speed  through the work zone.
