Tennessee Environmental Procedures Manual

Search Tips

Overview

TDOT's Tennessee Environmental Procedures Manual (TEPM) is presented in both HTML (the online language of the Internet) and Adobe Acrobat format.

  • HTML pages offer immediate viewing of the manual content online, provide navigation links to all content pages, provide navigation links to external website resources and information, and allow the printing of selected pages.
  • Adobe Acrobat formatted files (or pdf files) offer enhanced navigation options with a document file, including text searching, zooming, printing, and file downloading/saving.

When using the TEPM, begin with the Detailed Table of Contents. This link appears near the top of the navigation menu (in the right-hand column) and displays a detailed outline of the manual contents. The outline is comprised of links that will direct you to content sections of interest.

A hard copy of the TEPM may be obtained by printing the entire manual from the website home page or by printing individual chapters. Printable chapters, figures and forms may be accessed from the drop-down menu at the top of each chapter page, titled "Chapter <x> Printable Documents".

About Adobe Acrobat (pdf) Files

If your computer system doesn't currently have Adobe Acrobat installed, you may install the latest Adobe Acrobat Version from this page or from the navigation menu (right-hand column of website). Please follow the instructions provided by the Adobe Acrobat website.

When an Adobe Acrobat (pdf) document opens, a Table of Contents window will appear in the left-hand portion of the viewing screen. The document will appear in the main viewing area in the right-hand portion of the viewing screen. Main and sub-chapter headings of the Table of Contents (e.g., 2.0 Project Identification and Development) are links to document chapters and chapter sub-sections.

Searching for Specific Content

A search function is provided specifically for the chapters of the TEPM. The search function provides advanced search functionality. General search tips are provided below to assist you in a successful search. Get advanced search help.

Basic Search

To enter a query, type in a few descriptive words and press the Enter key or select the Search button for a list of relevant results.

Spelling

A single spelling suggestion is returned with the results for queries where the spell checker has detected a possible spelling mistake. The spell checker feature is context sensitive. For example, if the query submitted is "gail divers, " "gail devers" is suggested as an alternative query. However, "scuba divers" would not return an alternate query suggestion.

Automatic "AND" Queries

By default, the search only returns pages that include all of your search terms. There is no need to include "and" between terms.

To broaden or restrict the search, include fewer or more terms.

"OR" Searches

The search supports the logical "OR" operator. To retrieve pages that include either word A or word B, use an uppercase "OR" between terms.

Does Capitalization Matter?

Searches are not case sensitive. All letters, regardless of how you enter them, are understood as lower case. For example, searches for "categorical exclusion, " "Categorical Exclusion, " and "Categorical exclusion" all return the same results.

Refining Your Search

Since the search only returns web pages that contain all of the words in your query, refining or narrowing your search is as simple as adding more words to the search terms you have already entered. The refined query returns a specific subset of the pages that were returned by your original broad query.

Phrase Searches

You can search for phrases by adding quotation marks. Words enclosed in double quotes ("like this") appear together in all returned searches. Certain characters serve as phrase connectors. Phrase connectors work like quotes and include hyphens, slashes, periods, equal signs, and apostrophes as phrase connectors.
