Research Grants

US DOT can fund transportation research projects that are not linked to specific projects, such as a broad context study of a resource type. TDOT has funded two such research projects to provide historical context: a National Register process study and a historic mill study. Click here to view copies of these two studies.

The most recent research grant was awarded to the Tennessee Historical Commission to digitize their historic and archaeological survey records in GIS format, making them available to the public via the internet. This will allow TDOT and other agencies to access and review sites previously surveyed by the Tennessee Historical Commission that will include the USGS map location, written description of the property, and photographs of the site.

There will be additional information  layers that will describe properties surveyed throughout the state.
