Public Law 699

Enacted in 1988, Tennessee Public Law 699 requires TDOT to provide the Tennessee Historical Commission (THC), a state agency administratively attached to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the opportunity to review and comment on any project that might demolish or alter a historic property. In addition, it requires that all state agencies consult with the Tennessee Historical Commission prior to transferring ownership of any property out of state ownership.

The Tennessee State Capitol
The Tennessee State Capitol is a historic
state-owned site that is protected under
Public Law 699. In order to consistently
provide historic resources with appropriate levels of documentation and preservation, TDOT historians generally apply the same historic standards to historic properties as they would for federal projects under Section 106.

Cloverbottom Mansion
The THC, which also houses the Tennessee State Historic Preservation office (TN-SHPO), reviews projects that fall under both Section 106 and Public Law 699. Their Nashville offices are located in the historic Clover Bottom Mansion.
